Zanzibar is small, but each coast has its own feel. Choosing the right one matters more than the star rating of a hotel. This guide compares the main areas.
Stone Town
The historic heart of the island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with carved doors, spice markets and rooftop restaurants. It has no real beach, so most guests stay one or two nights here and then head to the coast. Ideal for culture, food and history.
North coast: Nungwi and Kendwa
The north has white sand and calm, swimmable water at almost all tides, because the beaches face the open sea with little tidal change. It has the most beach life: bars, dive centers and sunset parties, along with quieter luxury resorts. Good for first-time visitors, couples and groups.
East coast: Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe
Wide, pale beaches with dramatic tides that pull the sea far out twice a day. At low tide you walk on sandbars and watch seaweed farmers at work, and at high tide you swim. Paje is the kitesurfing hub. Matemwe, further north, is quiet and the gateway to Mnemba Atoll for snorkeling and diving. Best for activities and for travelers who do not mind planning around the tides.
South coast: Kizimkazi and Menai Bay
Quiet and green, with small lodges, mangroves and dolphin trips. It is the most peaceful choice, with fewer restaurants and a slower pace. Good for those who want to unwind.
Pemba
The greener, quieter sister island, known for diving, small lodges and very few visitors. A short flight away.
