Mnemba Atoll

A protected coral reef off the northeast coast, known for snorkeling, diving, dolphins and sea turtles.

Mnemba Atoll is a small coral reef surrounding Mnemba Island, a short boat ride off the northeast coast of Zanzibar. The area is a protected marine zone, and its clear water and healthy reef make it the best-known snorkeling and diving spot on the island.

The island itself is private, but the reef around it is open to boat trips. Mornings are best, when the sea is calm and the light is clear.

What to do in Mnemba Atoll

  • Snorkel over coral gardens full of colorful reef fish.
  • Dive with certified guides along the reef walls.
  • Look out for green turtles and sometimes dolphins.
  • Combine the trip with a beach picnic on the way back.

When to go

Conditions are good for most of the year. Visibility and calm seas are usually best from June to March, and early in the morning.

Getting there

Boat trips leave from Nungwi on the north coast and from Matemwe on the northeast coast. They take 30 to 45 minutes each way. We can book a private or shared trip with a licensed operator.

Where to stay

Stay in Matemwe or Nungwi to be close to the departure points. Matemwe is quiet and elegant; Nungwi has more choice and nightlife.
