Zanzibar is warm, humid and relaxed, and you will live in light clothes. Here is a simple packing list.
Clothing
- Light cotton or linen shirts, shorts and dresses.
- Swimwear, with a spare so one is always dry.
- A light layer for evenings and air-conditioned rooms.
- A sarong or scarf, useful on the beach, in Stone Town and as a cover-up.
- Comfortable sandals and a pair of walking shoes.
Dress respectfully
Zanzibar is a mostly Muslim island. On resort beaches swimwear is fine, but in Stone Town and villages, cover shoulders and knees. It shows respect, and makes the visit more comfortable.
Sun, sea and health
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
- Reef shoes, because of sea urchins and sharp coral at low tide.
- A rash vest for long snorkeling trips.
- Insect repellent, and any prescribed medicines.
- A small first-aid kit with plasters, antiseptic and rehydration salts.
Electronics and documents
- A UK-style (type G) or type D plug adapter. The voltage is 230 volts.
- A power bank, since outages can happen.
- Passport, visa, insurance papers and some US dollars.
- A waterproof phone pouch for boat trips.
If you add a safari
Pack neutral colors, closed shoes and a warm layer, in a soft bag. Small aircraft do not take hard suitcases.
What to leave at home
Plastic bags are banned on Zanzibar, so avoid bringing them. Drones need permission, so leave yours behind unless you have arranged it in advance.
