Zanzibar Serena Hotel stands on the edge of the water in Stone Town, a short walk from the Old Fort and Forodhani Gardens. It opened in 1997 across two restored buildings, a 19th-century former telecoms building and an 18th-century townhouse, and keeps the Swahili character of both.
