South Coast

Dolphin trips from Kizimkazi, mangroves and sandbanks. Quiet, green and unhurried.

The south of Zanzibar is calm, green and much less visited than the coasts to its north and east. Kizimkazi is the starting point for early-morning boat trips to find dolphins in Menai Bay, and the coast has quiet beaches, mangroves and small fishing villages.

It suits travelers who like a slower rhythm, wildlife and a sense of space, and it is a gentle first stop for anyone who is tired from a long flight.

What to do in South Coast

  • Take a morning boat trip in Menai Bay to look for dolphins, with respect for the animals.
  • Swim or snorkel off the sandbanks and sandbars on a boat day.
  • Visit the old mosque at Kizimkazi, one of the oldest on the East African coast.
  • Explore the mangroves and the coastal villages by bike or on foot with a local guide.
  • Combine the visit with Jozani Forest, which is not far away.

When to go

August to March is good for the south, and the dolphin trips run all year if the sea is calm. March to May is the rainy season, so some small lodges close.

Getting there

Kizimkazi is about 1 to 1.5 hours from the airport and Stone Town by road. We arrange a transfer and can plan your dolphin trip for the first morning, before the boats get busy.

Where to stay

The south offers small beach lodges and villas, with an emphasis on peace rather than nightlife. Many stays include boat trips and meals.

Questions travelers ask

Will I definitely see dolphins at Kizimkazi?

Sightings are very likely but never guaranteed, because they are wild animals. We recommend the early morning and an operator who keeps a respectful distance.

Is the south coast good for swimming?

Yes at high tide. The sea is shallow and calm, and boat trips to the sandbanks give you crystal-clear water at any time.

Is the south coast good for children?

Yes. It is quiet, safe and full of simple, hands-on things to do, such as boat trips, mangroves and rock pools.
