Prison Island

A small island a short boat ride from Stone Town, known for giant tortoises, snorkeling and colonial history.

Prison Island, also called Changuu, is a small island about 15 to 20 minutes by boat from Stone Town. It was built in the 1890s as a prison, but was used as a quarantine station instead, and its old stone buildings can still be explored.

Today it is best known for its giant Aldabra tortoises, first brought to the island from the Seychelles, and for the clear water around its beach.
