Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is the only national park on Zanzibar. Its mahogany forest and mangrove swamp are the home of the endemic Zanzibar red colobus, a rare monkey found nowhere else in the world.
A guided walk takes about an hour and is easy for most visitors. It is a gentle, memorable wildlife experience, and a good stop between Stone Town and the east or south coast.
What to do in Jozani Forest
- Walk with a ranger and watch red colobus monkeys feeding in the trees.
- Follow the mangrove boardwalk and learn about the forest's ecology.
- Look for Sykes' monkeys, small antelope and forest birds.
- Combine the visit with a spice farm or a beach stop on the way to the coast.
When to go
Jozani is open all year. Mornings are cooler, and monkeys are often more active. Wear closed shoes and bring insect repellent in the wet months.
Getting there
Jozani is about 35 km (roughly 45 minutes) from Stone Town on the road to the east and south coasts. It fits easily into a transfer day.
Where to stay
Most visitors stay in Stone Town or on the east or south coast and visit Jozani on the way.
